Is it safe to bank transfer deposit for holiday rental?

it will be my first trip to Phuket with my family, I’m in contact with an agent base in Phuket,
For me to book one of his villas I need to transfer 50% deposit to their company account and another 50% one month before I arrive at the villa!!!

Is this safe, how do I know they will not just take my money and leave me and my family Stranded in Phuket.

Any advice would be great.

Make sure the local agent has been around for some time.

Also make sure they a local number, local address and local business bank account. Thai banks ask for alot of documentations so typically the company needs to be legitimate in order to setup and trade with a business account.

Do not send money to a personal bank accounts. Make sure you get all official receipts and even ask for the companies DBD number to check they are officially registered in Thailand.

Many local agencies have the option to pay for villas using a credit card, so that usually gives you extra protection with your credit card company if you really want that extra level. Also some agencies will let you transfer the money directly to the owner – which can again be easier and safer than giving it to a 3rd party – the agency can typically facilitate this.
